The pins I have are called "1x16 Brass Escutcheon PINS". They just look like brass nails.

Thanks John. I Googled them and they look like they're used for upholstery. I'm going to look into them.

There should be eight total. The pins often go missing or get pushed into the wood.

On cameras missing pins I have found that a couple of small brads not cut, but inserted into the holes after the back is in place assures me that the pins will not jump out while I'm pushing in a holder.

    Pilot hole needed?

So is it better to drill a pilot hole slightly smaller before driving in the brads or just tap the brads in with a hammer without drilling the holes?

I would think there is already holes were the pins came out. You could then fill those holes with a plastic filler, let it dry an drill a hole slightly bigger and then use epoxy glue to fix brad into place.
But yes I would drill a pilot hole first to stop the wood splitting
