Isn't an optician anyone who sells glasses?

I don't know any more!

When I was growing up we had opticians and dentists. Now we have optometrists, othodontists, opthalmologists and all sorts of other un-pronounceable variations.

Actually, the chap in our town who just sells glasses (not qualified to do tests) does point out that he is not an optician.

Does nobody use the title optician any more?

How about "oculist"?

In the US an Optician is licensed by the state they work in to adjust and fill prescriptions for eye wear. An Optometrist diagnoses eye correction and general eye health. An Opthamologist is an MD in eye surgery and is required to go through full medical school and residency. It's a shame you ask now and not when Ralph Eugene Meatyard was alive.
