Ditto that. My first thought when I saw the headline about the quake was, "Oh sh**, that's where Sean lives!" I was off by one island. I'll echo David's wishes for family and apuggers.

Reports of looting have been greatly exaggerated..turns out two guys smashed a window to steal a couple of six packs..ah, the media
Extensive damage, 1 fatality due to heart attack and two serious injuries.

One of the main reasons I moved from Wellington is I couldn't get used to the quakes. I lost count how many times I would be woken up to the booming noise of boulders rumbling beneath me and the elevators in the Apartment banging against the shafts. Nothing like having mini heart attacks every week hehe. We're a fair distance from any major fault lines now

Christchurch, of all likely places. Even the scientists were surprised.
It is upsetting to learn that many of Christchurch's beautiful old heritage churches are badly damaged from the quake and facing the demolition ball. I hope it doesn't come to that. If it's not old Mount Ruapehu blowing its top, NZ throws a wobbly. I think Gisborne and Nelson have also experience quakes in recent times; not sure when.
Sean, I chiefly remember from Wellington what it did to my sister's expensive perm in 2003! She got that downtown, then we proceeded to the wharf area. Bang! Blustery gales and bale and a shower thrown in, and the pricey pink-tinged perm was no more. . .

I am glad the NZ seems to have come through this well.
