Not that i care because I would never use the service [if that is what it is called] anyway.
No plans, they say, but the language of the T&Cs clearly allows for that. It's more likely a PR-forced u-turn, that might even get their lawyers to write slightly less horrible terms for their users.

Sadly, we live in an era that forces us to accept unfair terms, small print, 96-page agreements, etc. Fortunately, peer pressure, like in this case, might help change them at times. Anyway, I do not use IG and I am not on FB, though I Tweet and blog...

It's just written that way to cover them for when people share an image and they have no control over where it will appear. Same as Facebook.

I'm sure they have no intention to sell images despite what paranoid minds think!

Pretty much sums up what I don't like about Instagram and why I don't use it.

There are many legalese options that could cover their butt without the language that seizes copyright. With corporations it usually boils down to what they can get away with, not what's fair or right.
That's just, like, my opinion, man...

Wow! What a fantastic article. Goes way beyond stupid instagram and addresses the whole degradation of amateur photography. Thanks for sharing.

With professional photographers struggling to make much money from their stock pictures, I find it hard to believe that Instagram could make anything from Instagram type oversaturated, filterered snapshots of nothingness.

so why is it that every time I pull out a camera, I get at least one, usually several people standing around staring at me and asking dumb stuff like,

    "What kinda camera is that?"
"can you still get film for that?"
"how many mega pixels is that?"
    "Is that black and white?"

and the one I really dislike....

    "Why would you use that?"

Why can't people just leave me the F&%^$ alone and let me photograph stuff like all the iPhone wielding people?
Brad, do you have something specifically against Apple and its iPhone, or don't you realize that the majority of "smart" phones sold are Android platform? Your complaint about the smart phone culture is well placed, but targetting specifically Apple without mentioning Samsung, et al, is simply unfair.

And no, I don't own a smart phone myself.
