Where can one learn about the laws relating to portrait photography - especially in the state of California? Can anybody suggest a good refence on this subject?

    Brad,

You can also probably contact PPA in Atlanta. They can probably point you in the right direction. PPA and ASMP are probably the largest groups of Professional Photographers. PPA is made up primarily of photographers that specialize in weddings, portraits, school photography, etc.

Don't know if this helps but most states now have all their statutes on a searchable database where you can search "photographer" and other similar words and phrases. I have done this several times looking for any bans on photography that the police keep referring to (I've yet to find any that actually exist around here.) Some states may license occupations and those agencies have their own administrative codes, so you need to search those as well. Don't forget county and municipal ordinances where you live/work. There are also court rulings that could effect you. It can get pretty complicated!
