What would you have me see if...

I wanted to "show" the sound of a pebble's falling down a well casing, pinging against the sides; falling into silence? Showing a "sound experience" via visual medium, -crossing the sensory categories, is intrigueing.

I honestly don't think it is possible. Kind of like trying to visually show the sounds of late summer birds chirping. Or listening to a Monet. Might be a neat challenge though.

I'd capture this type of image with a camcorder.

The first thing that came to mind when I read you post was a line from Ghostbusters - "Listen! You smell something?" OK, an a more serious note, your concept is interesting, but too far abstracted for me to have any real input at this time. I have seen attempts to do similar things, but they appeared to have had little impact on the general public, and certainly left me wanting. To be successful you would have to find a way to represent the specific, unique quality of your subject and it seems to me that this would be like trying to invent the Rosetta Stone from scratch. Regardless, don't let anyone try to stop you if you feel passionately about it.

It's kind of hard to see how you'll be able to convey this visually. Not to say that some pics don't convey a sense of sound - such as one of a babbling brook or crashing waves. But your example seems a bit too subtle.

Getting attention doesn't provide lasting impression.

Cross processing while dramatic usually isn't practiced thoroughly enough to become a master of the technique so that it can then be used to communicate more than a splash-in-your-face experience. There's a medical term for people who experience across the normal sensory boarders. Once with a sinus infection any sound became painful to me. As a child-of-any age if you've ever heard a pebble falling down a well casing -it's not forgotten. A sound that N. Hawthorne could make into "Forever More......". (Ostensibly innocuous yet the lid gets slapped and covered with stone for the reminder of disappearance into the silence of darkness.) So maybe the "subject" is the threat of disappearance into the silence of darkness, I.E., death, mortality, the unknown and unknowable -that surely has been a photographic subject.
