i found it to be pretty much right on the money ..
i don't know about 1K/weekend, but ...

there are a lot of national portrait studios
that hire people with relatively no photography experience
they train them in a week or 2 and they end up taking pretty good
portraits. they photograph individuals, babies, school kids ... you name it ..
and the general public doesn't seem to mind ... "cute" is the keyword

haven't you ever seen they companies that superimpose portraits in brandy snifters ?
