Dave,
My favorite shooting setup is with two cameras, a 24mm 2.8 on one camera, an 80-200 2.8 on the other and a 50mm 1.4 in the bag. I have modified that a bit with digital, as I have a 17-50 2.8 instead of two primes, but still the same thought process. With that setup, I feel that I can cover just about anything. I am a former photojournalist, so fast glass is my favorite so I don't have to use flash. I like to travel light, so two lenses, two cameras, two flashes, and a small bag for batteries etc. is enough for me.

Oh and like everyone else said, just shoot a lot That will help you more than any lens could. Take care.
