Josef Koudelka: from reportage to panoramic

Czech photographer Josef Koudelka has always been one of my favorites and I thought to post something for anyone interested in reportage as well as panoramic work.

Koudelka has published three monographs that I know of, possibly more. They are Gypsies, Exils, and Chaos. The first two are books of black and white reportage and the third was made using a panoramic camera. I believe his work is very worthy of admiration and study by anyone interested these photographic genres. As far as I'm concerned, he is among the best if you want to study photographic composition. Also, I think it's critical to study his books and not just single images found through Google searches. The books are great examples of sequencing and the interplay of images on facing pages.

Additional information about Koudelka and examples of images can be found at the links below. Enjoy!!

He also did an earlier panoramic book called Reconnaissance Wales I think

And in doing these type of panoramics, he is very much carrying out an homage to his illustrious Czech forbear Sudek who was a masterof the panorimic format (among others), especially his industrial panoramics in Sad Landscape

    Koudelka/Sudek

Yes, Sudek is another great Czech photographer who used panoramic views and produced a very personal style. He lost an arm in World War I but that didn't discourage him at all and he went on to a very long and productive career. Both he and Koudelka are among my all-time favorites. Thanks for the additional titles!
