If you are going to mention Gordon Parks, you should also mention Roy de Carova (sp?) and James van der Zee (again sp?). I saw an exhibit of Roy de Carova's work at SUNY New Paltz while visiting my daughter, an excellent cross section of his work. Too bad the little gallery it was in was a little too dim.

When I first got interested in photography I loved the work of Garry Winnogrand, and Robert Frank, but lately, I find myself looking at Gertrude Kasebier. Her portraits, although very painterly, are so modern, and her sitters so clearly engaged in life. It's great stuff.

Besides the usual (Adams, Strand and The Westons) I would also have to cite:

    Minor White
    Margaret Bourke-White
    Brassai
    James Nachtwey

I think that a debt of gratitude should be forever paid to Alfred Stieglitz for pioneering photography as art, art critics be damned. And also to Nancy Newhall for her documentation and great writings on photography photographers, particularly on Group f/64.

Along with a number of photographers that have been mentioned so far, two from the Monterey Peninsula, Wynn Bullock and Morley Baer are inspirational. I must have a thing for Monterey Peninsula large format B&W photographers since Ansel and Edward are on the top of my list. Also, the photographs and, especially, the writings of Galen Rowell inspire me to take longer hikes to find photographs than I might otherwise take.

Well I hold well over 80% in extremely high regard. Is only one I'm not keen on but I do have to admit I do realise his importance and influence on other photographers like Willy Docherty etc.

But would add John Goto & John Blakemore, Paul Caponegro & Minor White, and also Andy Goldsworthy. And then the essays/articles by Gerry Badger, Peter Turner etc.
