Galleries to Visit in New York City

I will be spending a few days in NYC next week and was wondering if anyone could offer some photography gallery recommendations? Good restaurants would also be helpful.

There are a few threads on this, so do a search, and you'll turn up many suggestions.

When you get to town, pick up _The Village Voice_ for free anywhere in the five boroughs for the latest gallery and museum listings. You can also check www.villagevoice.com. There are other gallery listings, but the Voice is as good as any of them.

If you're interested in alt process work, I highly recommend the John Stevenson gallery. Info at www.johnstevenson-gallery.com.

There are good restaurants all over town. You can check the Zagat's Guide for descriptions and recommendations. Depends on what you like and your price range. If you know more specifically what you're looking for, I can probably recommend something.

    Here's a list to start: http://art-support.com/galleries_ny.htm

Always interesting is the John Stevenson Gallery on 14th Street.

The "gallery district" has moved in recent years to the Chelsea area, which is the far west side above 23rd street on up into the 40's I think. There are some buildings that house as many as a dozen galleries. I suggest you google what you're looking for and plan a walking route. You can pick up a free publication called, curiously, GALLERYGUIDE which will help as well as it includes a map with all the buildings that contain galleries and their names. Good luck and have a great time.

    Stevenson is on 23rd St.

Most of the Chelsea galleries are clustered between about 18th and 28th, and there are a few other hotspots in Soho, midtown and the Upper East Side.

    ooops!!

Actually, I'm looking at the August Galleryguide right now. I was mistaken
about how far uptown the gallery concentration goes In any case, David is there much more often than I am and knows the area. Again, good luck!

The suggestion about the gallery guide is excellent. You can purchase a copy in most galleries, and it makes a nice (and lightweight) souvenir to take home. One of the features of the book is that it includes street maps that locate the galleries and also identifies subway stations. But I suggest spending time at the web site looking at the listings, and preparing a list of the galleries you want to visit, before the trip.

The gallery cluster is west of 10 Avenue, and between 19th and 25th street. You can easily spend a full day wandering around that area. There are also a few galleries uptown - some on 57th street.

There are a lot of great restaurants in New York. When we werre last there in December, we wandered into the Chelsea Square Restaurant at 23rd and 9th. It reminded me a lot of what we call a diner in our area - extensive menu, enormous portions, and relatively inexpensive. I ordered flounder and I almost couldn't finish the meal.

Another place we have enjoyed is Mustang Harry's on 7th Ave, around 30th street. It's easily within walking distance of the gallery district and on the direct route from Penn Station.

David mentioned the John Stevenson Gallery - between 8th and 9th on 23rd. That's a must-see on our visits. He specializes in high quality (high-priced) photography, mostly platinum and other alternative processes. And it's a nice (air conditioned) place to stop and coiol off while walking from the subway.

There is a smaller cluster of galleries in SoHo, mainly along Broadway. In particular, the building at 560 Broadway has a number of interesting galleries, and just a block north at 670 Broadway is another building that includes the Leica Gallery. There are several good restaurants in this area - Zoe and Milady's (both on Prince Street west of Broadway) are examples we have enjoyed.

Please go to the Howard Greenburg gallery and tell me if you like it . I have been wanting to visit this gallery in New York ever since I saw my first Kenro Izu image. He prints 20x14 platinum contacts of still life images amoung many other things. The gallery was represented at photo london 2005 and i got to see one of his images for real and it knocked my socks off, absolutely stunning.

Here is the website link : http://www.howardgreenberg.com/

Hope you have a safe and enjoyable trip.

Greenberg is a fine gallery. Lots of classic B&W there.
