Strangely enough, last night I came across the new website of Ed Buziak, the former producer of Darkroom User (later Camera & Darkroom) magazine in the UK. One of Ed's trick questions from a few years back was "How do you earn £25,000 a year from publishing a specialist photo mag? You put £50,000 a year of your own money into it!" There may well be the bitter taste of experience in that comment, but I've no doubt that the economics will be a bit variable.
On the other hand, freedom from chasing advertisers would allow a certain amount of editorial freedom, although I think Sean has struck a good balance here by allowing sponsors to become involved on APUG. View Camera mag used to be £7.50 at my local Borders store and I had to see at least a couple of relevant articles before I would part with my cash for it. They subsequently reduced it to £5.75, but stopped stocking it as it was almost certainly too specialised for this area. I guess £15 every couple of months wouldn't break the bank if the quality was right, so I'll await developments (pun possibly intentional!)
Lets have a lot more of Les in B&W magazine just keep him away from the digital side, we need his preaching to be 110% Analog.

Saw Les at Focus on imaging in 2006, he was doing anolouge demo's for Ilford and d...i ones for Fotospeed, suppose a man got to eat some how. While giving the Ilford demo on their then new selenium toner a lad at the back of the crowd was takeing photos, Les asked " is that digital" yes came the reply, Les threw the lad a roll of FP4 telling him " put that in your camera and it will give you the finest digi prints you will ever see" Made me chuckle all day.
So, has anyone else had the new issue yet or is the Isle of Lewis ahead again?
Hey, if you've had any post in Lewis since last Wednesday you're doing better than the rest of us! (for non-Uk residents, there is a postal strike just now)
The magazine is here to serve the needs of the reader and although it does reflect the way technology is changing the way we capture and create images I am busy examining its strengths and weaknesses - hence my presence here seeking opinion.
Hello David and welcome to APUG. We get your publication here in Dublin, though only some shops stock it.
I've always been a bit curious about the magazine and the digital/film mix. Quite simply there are few worldwide magazines that i've seen that can touch you for your film content. The same cant be said for your digital content, which is inferior to many of digital only magazines.
I know many people into digital photography and several of them still enjoy shooting film for black and white. None of them would only do digital black and white and would rather a full digital magazine with the occasional black and white feature. So I'm a bit puzzled about your target audience.
As part of your new role, I would suggest you take a look at going film only, take on colour as well and just drop the digital. I say that not because of any bias on my part but for two reasons. One, a film magazine would be almost unique on the market and two, the others do the digital stuff better.
Whatever you decide, good luck to you and your new Leica

While I sympathise with the Posties, it is frustrating as I am awaiting delivery of a lens.

I don't the island posties have caught up with things on the mainland. HAving said that, some paper from Retrophotographic is still on the way. Somewhere near Basingstoke I shouldn't wonder.
BTW; the mag has a nice article by Ailsa on Albert Watson, some nice reader images plus a great portfolio by Paul Kenny. All the usual printing stuff but a whole digi section at the back and still, the DSLR listings! Why?

Fintan - Please forgive me for sounding a little glib about this, but that is a bit of a silly thing to say ... Black and White Photography should take on colour? It's like saying Outdoor Photography should have a section on studio lighting, or every Ladies public convenience should be built with a urinal in it!
