Is this book an better choice then Larry Bartlett book or that from Les Maclean's Creativ B&W Photography and/or Tim Rudman's Master Printing Course?
What makes it so special?

It really gets to grips with important issues of honing your vision as well as your technique-JB isn't just a great photographer, he can communicate his thoughts on the medium in a way that will really help you move your work on to a higher level.

Harry, I find the Larry Bartlett book to be different from the others due to the fact that he "helped/rescued" some badly taken good photos to come up with a brilliant end result, whereas Les and Tim's books are more about shooting and processing themselves. I (would-be photographer) was actually using Larry's book last weekend to "prove" to my Significant Other (would-be artist) that mastery of the technical aspects was what turned a good photographer into a great one.

This was part of an argument that roughly went along the lines that she believed an artist will turn a scene into art regardless of technical knowledge, whereas my take is that you have to be a master of the technicalities in order to ensure that what you see before you is what ends up on paper. The bottom line, however, is that when she hits you with the book (depends on how well you argue your case), John & Larry's books are softbacks and consequently hurt less than Les and Tim's hardbacks.

Larry was an absolute master at making wonderful prints from poor negatives, please don't think I'm criticising the press photographers when I say that. they sometimes shoot under very difficult conditions. I have Larry's book and would recommend it to anyone.

John's book is, in my opinion, probably the best black and white photography text book that has ever been written for he addresses the thinking behind an image in a very deep fashion.

John, I could replace the hardback version of my book with a softback if it is likely to cause you less pain.

I just have to tell you. if you have not got your copy of this months mag, it is worth buying alone for Elizebeth Roberts Interview with the great man himself, David Bailey.

The article is so well written that it realy does get across the mischievous character of the man. Its not often that I laugh out loud while reading a magazine.

Brilliant stuff.
