I'm thinking of making a trip to the Otways some time next month, has anyone some suggestions on good places to go. would like to do some coastal shots as well. I don't know this area at all.
any advice is appreciated.
Do you like waterfalls? I am told there are some 75 in the Otways NP - most of them will require some bush-bashing, or at least some significant walking to reach. There are many sandstone monoliths and/or Islands arounf Port Campbell and towards the Otway peninsular. Some really wierd rock shapes around around Rainbow Falls (not a waterfall, actually - it's on the beach) but it, too requires a significant walk to reach.
Have downloaded a couple of maps from nat parks on the Otways, lots of tracks, but will need to see if they are open, I want to take both 4x5's and heaven forbid my Digital with me, so will be carting a fair bit of gear, mainly after coastal shots, will look for somewhere to base myself then do trips from there.
Pete can tell you all about carrying 4x5 and a digital (ahem) "light meter"
Lots of places along the Great Ocean Road to explore, Garry (Poisson Du Jour) is the one to speak to about anything down this direction, he seems to know all the good spots.
Unless you have a really, really well set up 4WD with seriously aggressive muddies fitted and have a similarly set up companion car travelling with you, the Otways is not a place to venture down 4WD tracks. The place never dies out and the tracks are etched into the sides of mountans, are badly maintained and overgrown and are generally too narrow to turn around.
I have sent you an email with a few happy snaps I took a couple of years ago.
BTW Bimbi Park on the Otway peninsular is a congenial little caravan park and jumping-off point for exploring the coast in that area which also has on-site vans and not too expensive. Likewise Forrest caravan park about 25Km inland is another favourite jumping-off point for exploring the Otways.
Thanks for the info and advice on the Roads in the N.P. a Cabin for a few nights appeals to me will check it out. thanks for the happy snaps pete.
will start to think about my planing
Pete : have emailed a pic of my point & shoot, thanks again
Greetings , On march 7th. 8th. 9th. We stayed in a cabin at ' Bimbi Park ' , great location but the weather was not good for L / F photography , perhaps better luck next time ..... Cheers Barrie B.
Since you mentioned it Pete, I've looked up Bimbi Park, looks like a nice, family friendly holiday spot. With a new baby and a wife not too keen on 'roughing' it (anywhere with red dust and a bore shower, or no shower, ie, everywhere I like to go!) I think it could be a good compromise, we'll definitely be visiting there in the next 12 months.
Yes, a very nice spot. It may get a little noisy at night as the park is located in a large stand of just the right sort of gum trees to feed Koalas.
In a couple of weeks, I'll have a little time off and I hope to make at least one (hopefully 2 or so) trips out for a good walk, so if anyone's looking to head out anywhere, let me know, I'm happy to tag along, or have a tagger-alonger.
