Use the setup in a darkened room with a torch. A laser light won't work as well, but any DC light source that can be shone at the entire lens front element (or lens mount in the case of a SLR) is fine.

I've used this method in a similar way. I just use the microhpone on my laptop as the input. No electronics required. The circuit shown should however give you a cleaner signal with less noise.
