Not necessarily a flash of light can expose part of the film and not the whole reel. I still believe that it could be caused by reflections in the gate and these are dependant on the location of the lightsource. A C-mount lens should cover the film area without vignetting or any other problems. Can't explain the uneven devlopment since I doubt they used reels to develop the film.
Visualproducts sells a C mount to PL-Adapter to use PL-Lenses on C-mounts oh the possibilities.
It's the light coming through the perforation during scanning. Also, the gate in this camera has been expanded horizontally so that it comes quite close to perforation. The scanner used is sprocketless, so the light can shine through the perforations.
Do I understand you correctly the gate is wider than standard Super 8?
It has an aspect-ratio of 1.6 , which is called Super-Duper-8 by some.
Super-8 is 1.35 .

Well, in a sense it's like a hybrid of super-8, 2x8mm and minidv. While it's not quite as simple as most super-8 cameras, it's even stabler than 2x8mm and one can easily buy modern negative film for it unlike for 2x8mm. Compared to 16mm it's much more compact and the sound features are neat.

It is a high end "stationary" cine camera for S-8 format. So basically a different concept than S-8 from my point of view.
With stationary I mean that it needs a tripod or a holding brace. Whereas a typically S-8 camera can be handled with your body alone (to some extent).
Great benefit of the Logmar compared to S-8 though is that it enables to use a steadycam (or similar rig) due to its video-out.
That example looks stellar for super 8! I wish that there was such a following for 8mm! It is nice that there is still interest- enough to make a new camera for Super8 film!
