Welcome to APUG Tex and guns up! Several of my family members have degrees from Tech and I spent a summer there getting a few of my upper level classes in mathematics a few years back.

Welcome from sunny Australia, and beware the camera collecting addiction....it's too late for me! I have a nephew in Houston, that's about as close as I get to Texas.

Hi leicam5,

Applied Linguistics is a relatively new branch of linguistics that's interdisciplinary in nature, combining several fields like psychology, second language acquisition, pedagogy, etc. It's basically a study of how people acquire second languages and how to teach them.

Philology has more of a literary and historical background to it.
