Seeking info on Zeiss Tessar 16.5cm

Hey there,

I just purchased a Zeiss Tessar 16.5cm mounted on a 4"x4" lensboard. I did a google search and found a few of them for sale, but no technical info. Can anyone give me some info on this lens and its compur shutter?

Did you check the google archives for rec.photo.equipment.large-format? If it's not in there the lens doesn't exist-)) If it's an older lens [pre 1940] you can check the serial number for the age here.

You can also check out the grimes website for some info on the shutter [I think] Is it one of those dial shutters?

That will hopefully work. It's from 1931. Considering the size of the board I guess it might have come out of a Graflex. I saw a 3x4 press camera a few months ago with the same lens. There is various info on the shorter [135mm] and some longer versions on google.

This one gives the coverage for the 180mm version. I'm guessing you could just do the math to figure out the coverage angle and compute the coverage for the 165mm.

I owned a beautiful Zeiss Tessar 16,5 cm lens. Used it on a 4X5 camera (old Graflex Century) with much suscess. It wasn't the sharpest lens I've ever owned, but was able to make 16X20 enlargements that were good enough to show people. Uncoated of course, but really a pleasent quality.

I did misspell Jena, thanks for the info guys. the lensboard fit right onto the "hulk" my 4x5 B&J Orbit Monorail. I was looking for a cheap portrait lens to do 3/4 portraits with the 4x5. Looks like I got it http://apug.org/forum/html/emoticons/smile.gif It cost me less than $50 with shipping via ebay. 1931 is cool, I have a restored 1931 woody Wagon http://apug.org/forum/html/emoticons/wink.gif

As I recall I paid about $60.00 for mine on the US ebay as well. And the qualities of the lens are well suited for a 4X5 Portrait lens. Sharp but not pore popping...
