I JUST bought the 3200 6-7 months ago!

See, THSI is why I avoid digicams....

This is also why there will never be anyone using a 10, 20, 50 or 100 year old digi cam..but there are some great 100 year old view cameras out there....

I am going to Photo L.A. tomarrow Maybe they'll have one there. I have the 2250 which is useless for negs.

I purchased the Epson 3200 last month knowing the 4870 is around the corner. There is (was?) a $100 rebate that brought the final price down to $256.US

Saw sample scans from the new 4870 and was not impressed!

Am in the market for a medium format scanner to replace my ancient Epson 1640SU with tiny transparency adapter.... was considering the Epson 3200 but now the 4870 is out so I might look into that too. Any feedback on the upcoming 4870 would be appreciated!

I think the 3170 will be fine for me, but now I'm waiting. Prices of it and the 3200 are bound to fall with the introduction of the 4870.

I have the Epson 3200 Pro as well. Works fine. There is one problem though - dust. Buy lots of dust off.

Actually I'd like to know how others deal with getting rid of the dust?

Keep the cats out of the room, use an air purifier, and dust off. Also be careful what you wipe the glass with, some of those "lint free" wipes aren't!

The other thing too, is ensure you configure your Epson 3200 to a decent profile like Adobe RGB. And you'll have to test your scanner a couple of times to get the right colour settings.

You can have different custom settings too for different types of film. Not a bad scanner at all.

Just a quick note:

Pierre - if you have a PC, there are plenty of Firewire
addon cards for a PCI bus. Check www.newegg.com and type in "PCI firewire card" in the search box. You can pick one up for about $20. I'd hate to see you limit your choice of scanners.

One difference by the way between the Epson 3170 and the 3200/3200 pro is that the 3170 is NOT supported by Ed Hamrick's fabulous Vuescan scanning driver, whereas the 3200 is. (Ed says they used a weird command set and won't give out any details, so I'm not sure it will ever be supported.) Check www.hamrick.com for information about Vuescan - people over on Usenet in comp.periphs.scanners swear by it, and I do too.
