I always use a Skylight 1B for colour and (at least) a pale yellow for B&W, partly to protect the lens and partly because I do a lot of aerial work where there is a lot of UV and too much blue light.

If you want another cautionary tale, a colleague of mine used to fly cameras over archaeological sites on a huge kite. The kite was flown first then the camera hoised up to it on a cradle with a power winder and remote control. It once fell off onto pasture land, from about 100' up. The Skylight was smashed, as was the winder. The camera (an OM 2) and lens were fine (and they used to tell me Olympus cameras were fragile).
