Actually that is just the opposite of what I've read and my own experience:

The "Northern Lights", at their most dazzling from December to March when nights are longest and the sky darkest...
In addition, everything I've read or know about the lights are that they are not even remotely connected with the seasons, but hinge completely on solar activity
