I've been teaching for about two months and I have already run into this.
As far as recognizing film goes... In the Digital Photo class I'm teaching, I've used a couple film cameras to demonstrate certain things (like shutter speeds, or focusing). A couple of my students looked at me like I had grown an extra head when I pulled out the Nikon F3. But I don't think anybody in the class has never heard of film; some of them don't understand why anyone would still use film, but they all know what it is.
I *always* wanted to know how things worked. I was so into it, actually, that I took things apart to find out. I don't understand the whole 'just give me the answer' mindset. The best thing about learning something is finding out the hows and whys.
The fact that kids don't have the wonder anymore makes me sad.
No idea what's going to happen next, but I'm hoping it involves being wrist deep in chemicals come the weekend.
