What do you like to photograph?
Adams type landscapes? Cityscapes? Junkyards and fire hydrants? Portraits?
Do you prefer precision and punch in your photos? Then get a modern(ish) lens.
Are you intrigued by the understated and indefinate? Get a meniscus lens.
Can't decide? Get both types, you'll never regret it.
As John suggests, a meniscus in a longer focal length is quite adaptable.
Wide open they have a lovely glow without breaking down into mush.
Stopped down they have a nice classic, mellow nature.

Even at wide open it has nice atmosphere without going "wild".
