HCB is obviously as much a master of B.S. as a master of the camera and of editing. His whole schtick is being brilliant at B.S. The pictures are nice I will admit.
I think a contributing factor to wide-angle overuse is technology that enables it. Old speed graphics, and the TLRs and 35mm cameras that came later, all used normal-to-slightly-long lenses because those are economical to make in large f-stops. In an era of computer-designed lenses and usable 1250ISO, wide-angles are on the table as an option in many more situations. I don't think this is a bad thing, or that it was a good thing that earlier photography was informed and limited by the technology available at the time.
