FWIW, I think people are either "club joiners" or not. Further, my impression is that the ranks of the club-joiner type is smaller now than in times past. Clubs mean structured schedules - something that many people no longer have time for in their non-work life. But, it's (the potential for success) all a matter of having a critical mass of like-minded people, and having a couple of people willing to spend the time at organizing things. (People willing to spend time and effort with little or no expectation of appreciation.)

Irregularly-scheduled "events" may have greater potential for success presently. And, the participants are likely to be different at each such event. But, if approached casually, even having one other person show up can be considered a success.
