Hello from the Midwest
I'm not sure whether to classify myself as a hobbyist or an ameratuer. I have always been fond of taking photos, though I've primarily used point and shoot cameras. I finally got my first SLR, shot off a roll using all the auto functions, and have since put the camera in full manual mode.
As someone who is learning, I find it very discouraging to go to site after site and finding that so many people lean towards digital photography and encourage others to do so as well.
As a matter of fact, I recently stated that while out shooting some natures photos I was concerned that some may turn out blurry as I didn't have a tripod with me. One person responded that I could fix that problem by getting a digital camera. Half the enjoyment of using an SLR is controlling the outcome of the shots.
For me, there is a certain pride in taking the time, assessing the lighting, working to find the right compositon, and creating a good photo. I don't know that any of my photos are anything to get excited about, but I am sure I will improve over time and in the end the work will have been all mine.
I am grateful to find a site that is devoted to analog photography.
